Until the late 1970s/early 1980s waste products at industrial facilities were very poorly managed.  Inadequate waste disposal practices have lead to a catalogue of environmental issues, some of which will persist for many decades to come.  With increased public concern and robust waste legislation has come a greater emphasis on prevention and minimisation of waste, along with the effective management of wastes that are produced. This has culminated in the new “Duty of Care” requirement for waste producers to consider the waste hierarchy.
