Low Carbon Technology and Renewables
Case Studies
The recognition that action to address the causes of climate change is needed is prompting organisations to consider adopting low carbon technologies and switching to renewable energy sources. The development of low carbon alternatives to traditional manufacturing, processing and operating techniques is providing organisations with the opportunity to reconsider their business models.
What is the benefit?
Organisations are under pressure from stakeholders, regulators and governments to contribute to the efforts to tackle climate change. In the UK, the government strategy has been to promote the “decarbonisation” of the economy by switching to alternatives to fossil fuels. In the built environment, carbon-neutral homes and buildings are being promoted. The industrial sectors can implement a range of measures to achieve low carbon goals, including lean production, energy efficiency, and alternative technologies. These measures also have the potential to deliver cost savings and improve energy security.
Switching to renewable energy sources can also be beneficial, not only in reducing emissions but also in reducing energy costs. In some circumstances, on-site generation of electricity, heat or steam from alternatives to fossil fuels, including process wastes, can be feasible.
Why CRA?
CRA has considerable experience of working with organisations in the industrial sectors to improve operational performance. These include permitted installations, where Best Available Technique (BAT) for energy efficiency is a requirement. Our knowledge of processes and their management equips our staff to support our clients in identifying opportunities for innovation, to reduce energy use and emissions. CRA can also provide guidance in management improvements to deliver low cost efficiencies in the operation of processes, including through staff training.
CRA also provides guidance in the design, planning, environmental impact assessment, and installation and commissioning of renewable generation, including anaerobic digestion, combined heat and power, and energy from waste.
