Surveys

Type 1- Location and Assessment Survey (Presumptive Survey)

A Type 1 asbestos survey is a presumptive survey that does not include sampling.  It consists of a visual survey which involves identifying potential asbestos containing materials (ACMs). The Type 1 Asbestos Survey should also record the suspect ACMs condition and extent. Due to the presumptive nature of the Type 1 Survey, it may mean that non-ACMs are subject to management which would incur unnecessary costs related to their management.

Type 2- Limited Access Sampling Survey

The Type 2 asbestos survey includes the collection suspected ACMs samples to confirm weather or not the material contains asbestos. The survey is also used to assess the condition and extent of ACMs. The survey is a limited intrusive survey where samples are collected in inconspicuous areas so as not to damage the building construction.    The surveys are conducted with due concern for the sensitive nature of the work and with care to ensure minimal disruption of normal site activities and workers welfare.

Type 3- Full Access Sampling Survey

The Type 3 asbestos survey is normally conducted prior to extensive renovation or demolition.  This survey includes a full sampling programme, including destructive sampling of materials. The survey allows accurate assessment of the type and extent of asbestos containing material requiring removal and disposal prior to demolition.

CRA can advise you on which type of survey is most suitable for your particular needs. Our experienced asbestos surveyors can undertake Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 Asbestos Surveys and are accredited by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) P402 - Building, Surveying and Bulk Sampling.  All surveys are carried out to HSE (Health and Safety Executive) MDHS (Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances) and BOHS standards.  All samples are sent to an independent, UKAS accredited laboratory for analysis. Our staff are also certified in BOHS P404 - Air Sampling and Clearance Testing of Asbestos.
