Facility Decommissioning and Demolition

In response to industry demands, CRA developed a common process for the assessment, cleanup, and eventual disposition of closed facilities - the Building Decommissioning Assessment (BDA).   CRA has successfully conducted BDAs at a variety of industrial and commercial facilities. These include petrochemical facilities, automotive plants, machining plants, energy production facilities, and many others.  Over the past decade, CRA has managed the decommissioning and demolition of over 30 million square feet of former manufacturing and related structures.

CRA has developed a comprehensive 6-Step approach for the cost-effective completion of BDAs.  CRA's 6-Step approach ensures that all potential client liabilities associated with facility disposition are managed safely and cost-effectively.

1. Initial Site Investigation:
Develop site disposition options including cost analysis, historical file review, interviews, and preliminary site inspection.

2. Project Criteria:
Determine the criteria to be applied to the assessment, assess health and safety concerns, and develop sampling/analysis plan.

3. Follow-up Assessment:
Implement sampling plan and conduct follow-up inspections and interviews.

4. Decommissioning Strategy:
Identify and report equipment, products, wastes, structures, building materials (e.g., asbestos and lead paint), utilities, and other physical or environmental hazards requiring decommissioning.

5. Specifications and Bid Documents:
Develop technical specifications for building decommissioning, prepare bid documents, and assist the client in contractor procurement.

6. Decommissioning Implementation:
Provide professional oversight and documentation of decommissioning activities.
