The waste sector has experienced significant challenges over the past decade with both changes in regulation and a change in focus away from landfill to alternative waste management options. The almost universal acceptance of the waste hierarchy has resulted in huge changes to the way in which individual companies consider waste management. This in turn has provided opportunities for waste management companies to provide services increasingly higher up the waste hierarchy. Stakeholders increasingly expect waste operators to implement environmental management systems, develop and report on corporate responsibility strategies, and support initiatives such as various sustainability programmes.
