The Chemical and Pharmaceutical sectors have evolved into numerous sub-sectors that include commodities such as petrochemicals, polymers and agrochemicals, and more recently speciality and life science chemicals. The sector therefore faces a wide range of environmental and sustainability demands.

Large-scale processing companies are subject to environmental permitting, as well as industry-lead schemes such as “Responsible Care”. Those activities that are linked to the pharmaceutical industry also have to integrate such demands into the regulatory and quality regimes applied specifically to that industry. These require compliance with a wide range of conditions including environmental management and health & safety systems.

The sector also faces increasing pressure as their activities extend into developing countries and new communities, with different environmental conditions and risks. Investors, who are also governed by the regulatory demands in their own industry, require ever increasing information on sustainability assessments and corporate responsibility, and with specific emphasis on activities in less developed countries.
